Thornfield HallCharlotte Brontë (1816 - 1855) was the third of six children born to a clergyman in the village of Thornton, Yorkshire, UK. She was the oldest of three sisters - the others being Emily and Anne - who all went on to become novelists.

She began to write stories in 1929 and after discovering that her sister Emily was also writing poetry, published a collection of poems under the pseudonym Currer Bell with her sisters in 1846. But she is best known for her novels, of which perhaps the most popular is Jane Eyre.

Like her sisters and brother, Charlotte Brontë died tragically young and although outliving them all, she passed away in April 1855, aged only 38.

Charlotte Brontë wrote four completed novels during her lifetime. The complete text of all of them can be found on this web site.
